A German gin with a cult following, Monkey 47 is a rare, aromatic blend of 47 botanicals from the heart of the Black Forest and India. Meticulously crafted with lingonberries, hand-peeled citrus fruits, herbs, flowers and spices, it is produced in batches using traditional distilling methods. Today’s recipe was based on the original, created in 1945 by British Wing Commander Montgomery Collins. He arrived in Berlin to help rebuild a war torn Germany. While volunteering at the Berlin Zoo, he befriended a monkey named Max. Though Collins would eventually leave Berlin for the magical beauty of the Black Forest, Max the monkey remained an inspirational force.
Exploring the Black Forest’s rich bounty of botanicals, Collins was reminded of his childhood in India, where he was introduced to some of the world’s most exotic spices. Two distinct worlds of delicate flowers, aromatic herbs, robust spices and tangy citrus fruits, joined through the gin he created. It’s a gin of meticulous quality, with a curious name and heritage.
